OVERVIEW

Once thought to be harmless, evidence has proven surgical smoke plume to be a significant occupational health hazard for operating room personnel. Surgical smoke plume presents physical, chemical, and biological hazards for both health care providers and patients. This continuing education activity reviews the hazards of surgical smoke plume and risks associated with exposure to surgical smoke plume. Strategies for identifying key stakeholders and their roles in policy development will be discussed along with recommendations from current standards, guidelines, and resources to support the development and implementation of policies for protecting the surgical team and patients from hazards associated with surgical smoke plume.

LEARNER OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this continuing education activity, the participant should be able to: 

  1. Review the hazards of surgical smoke plume.
  2. Review the risks associated with exposure to surgical smoke plume.
  3. Identify key stakeholders and their roles.
  4. Utilize current standards, guidelines, and resources to support change.
  5. Discuss needs assessment, policy development, and program implementation.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

This continuing education activity is intended for use by perioperative registered nurses, surgical technologists, and other health care professionals who want to learn more or need to gain knowledge and skills regarding the hazards, standards, and guidelines to support change within a program.
